ANYONE CAN LEARN TO CLIMB!

Anyone – young or old, in shape or out, thin or not so thin – can get on the walls and experience the physical challenge and mental stimulation of climbing. The Alaska Rock Gym has terrain from less than vertical to overhanging, giving virtually everyone an opportunity to “climb the walls”. We offer our “Intro to Gym Climbing” class on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday – a great way to become familiar with the gym and indoor climbing.

THE ALASKA ROCK GYM OFFERS TWO TYPES OF CLIMBING:

Roped climbing on the taller walls, and bouldering, climbing on low walls in an un-roped fashion. Bouldering, while offering the same experience of working out the “problem” of the arrangement of the holds on the wall, allows the climber to remain low – only climbing to a height within his comfort zone. If height is an issue, bouldering is a great way to get started climbing. It requires no belayer and can be engaged in after just a short orientation.

ROPED CLIMBING REQUIRES TWO PEOPLE:

A climber who ascends the wall and a belayer. The belayer manages the rope protecting the climber from a fall to the ground. This activity involves a learning a sequence of tasks including a climber/belayer cross-check, taking up slack, catching a potential fall, and lowering the climber when she reaches the top of the climb. Our “Intro to Gym Climbing” class includes teaching the participants how to belay and certifying them as top rope belayers in the gym.

CLIMBING IS A GREAT FAMILY ACTIVITY

….and kids as young as two years old can prove to be agile and adept climbers. Children are always welcome at the Alaska Rock Gym! Once parents have been oriented to the gym and passed their belay certification, they can climb and belay their kids any time. Kids must be 14 years or older to earn their own belay certification, and all children under the age of 14 must be accompanied at all times by a supervising adult when in the gym.

The objectives of celebrating an International Men’s Day include focusing on men’s and boys’ health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting male role models. It is an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care. The broader and ultimate aim of the event is to promote basic humanitarian values.
International Men’s Day is celebrated in over 70 countries

2016’s

theme for International Men’s Day was “Stop Male Suicide.” In every country except China, the rate of suicide in men is higher than that of women, an some cases as high as six men for every one woman, and life expectancy is routinely less for men than women in all countries. To this end, “Global Action on Men’s Health.”

According to its creators, International Men’s Day is a time to promote positive aspects of male identity based on the premise that ‘males of all ages respond more energetically to positive role models than they do to negative gender stereotyping’.During past years the method of commemorating International Men’s Day included public seminars, classroom activities at schools, radio and television programs, peaceful displays and marches, debates, panel discussions, award ceremonies, and art displays. The manner of observing this annual day is optional, and any appropriate forums can be used. Early pioneers of IMD reminded that the day is not intended to compete against International Women’s Day, but is for the purpose of highlighting men’s experiences. In 2009 the following broad objectives were ratified as a basis for all International Men’s Day observations, and are applied equally to men and boys irrespective of their age, ability, social background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious belief and relationship status:

  • To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sportsmen but everyday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.
  • To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment.
  • To focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.
  • To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law.
  • To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.
  • To create a safer, better world; where people can live free from harm and grow to reach their full potential.

According to Men’s Activism News Network, International Men’s Day also interfaces with “Movember” – a worldwide moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health, one of the key themes promoted on IMD. It also interfaces with Universal Children’s Day on 20 November and forms a 48-hour celebration firstly of men, then children respectively, with a recognition of the bonds between them.

International Women Day (March 8)

is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900’s – a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced.

International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year.  In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements. An effective Women’s Day was the 1975 Icelandic women’s strike which paved the way for the first female president in the world.

In some regions, the day lost its political flavor and became simply an occasion for people to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. In other regions however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. Some people celebrate the day by wearing purple ribbons.

“Traditions are imploding and exploding everywhere – everything is coming together, for better or worse, and we can no longer pretend we’re all living in different worlds because we’re on different continents.” – Philip Glass
We live in a world where our common agenda is PEACE.
The multicultural traditions, races, philosophies converged as one when we realize that as humanity we breath the same air, drink the same water, eat from the same soil.
The opportunity to grow as an earthling with no prejudice, discrimination nor judgment towards others, makes me have the ability to contemplate the true essence of our human complexity. -emotions and consciousness-
